Struggling major firms turn to cosmetics market to enhance revenues

|

According to The Mainichi Daily News, Many major companies facing sluggish growth have broken into the cosmetics industry over recent years to boost group revenue. The firms include Fujifilm Corp., while frozen food giant Nichirei Corp. is set to join the industry this summer.  Nichirei will release new cosmetics developed by its subsidiary company, with a plan to expand its cosmetics business. The company said Wednesday that its cosmetics subsidiary Sylvan Inc. has developed skin-care and other cosmetics products using Nichirei's study results from the cultivation and research of orchids. Nichirei has been carrying out orchid research as part of its efforts to diversify its business.  Sylvan was established jointly by Nichirei and Showa Denko K.K. in April this year, with an investment of 60 percent and 40 percent, respectively. Nichirei, which started the cultivation and research of orchids 20 years ago, has succeeded in extracting a moisture rich essence from a species called Sylvan, and making it into products in cooperation with Showa Denko, a producer of raw cosmetics materials.  The six new kinds of "Sylvan" cosmetics, including skin lotion and moisturizer products, will be sold from August, but only by mail order.  "We aim to earn 500 million yen in sales in fiscal 2011," said Sylvan President Hiroki Kaneko.  Among other entrants from different businesses to the cosmetics industry, Fujifilm released its "Astalift" cosmetics series in September 2007, which contains collagen, a material in photographic films. The company also applied the antioxidant technology that protects photos from fading to its cosmetic products.  The Astalift items were initially available only by mail order, but since the start of their TV commercial featuring popular singers Seiko Matsuda and Miyuki Nakajima in June 2008, the products are now sold at drugstores as the name of the brand has become well known. A Fujifilm official says that sales of its cosmetics increased by five times over the past few months compared to last year.  Food manufacturer Ajinomoto Co., which launched its "Jino" cosmetics based on its amino acid research results in 1997, now has some 40 kinds of beauty items. Nihonsakari Co., a sake brewery in Hyogo Prefecture's Nishinomiya, has also been selling its "Komenuka Bijin" cosmetics containing natural rice bran produced from sake brewing.
